Outdoor spaces are not often considered a high priority, however with inner-city living, every square metre counts as precious real estate that needs to be utilised! The outdoor space should be just as stylish and inviting as the indoors. Here are some tips on designing outdoor areas to become a welcome extension of the interior…

Embrace the Surroundings

Don’t distract too much from the natural surroundings. For the larger pieces of furniture use neutral or muted colours to blend in with the outdoors and not to take the focus away from the surrounding environment. Make the most of the views by arranging seating areas that look out beyond the boundaries of the property.

Use Interior Accents

For the outdoor space to feel connected with the indoors, feature accents of colours, patterns or textures that are present within the home. Use soft furnishings and decorative layers that flow from the inside, out. Home comforts such as cushions, rugs, throws, plant pots and candle holders can help achieve this, adding a small splash of colour that is continual within the Interior design of the home.

Give Purpose

Think about how the outdoor space will be used and plan accordingly. Whether it be alfresco dining, peaceful relaxation or social entertaining, make sure the area is designed to fulfil an intended use. By giving a specific functionality to an outdoor area, it can feel like an additional room within the home and will be more likely to be used and enjoyed on a regular basis. Even if it is just a small space to enjoy a solo morning coffee!

Comfort is Key

To be inviting, an outdoor space ultimately must be comfortable. Seat cushions need to be supportive, chairs need to be ergonomically considered, fabrics need to be soft and homely. The quality and practicality of the outdoor furniture is just as important as the pieces indoors, if not more so as it has the harsher outdoor elements to contend with.
