MAKING AN ENTRANCE: HALLWAY DESIGN

Written by BoConcept Contract | Mar 29, 2022 12:00:00 PM

During the interior design process of a home, the hallway can often be the "forgotten space" or an "afterthought," as it doesn’t necessarily seem like a high priority given the size and functionality of the space. We place a high value on bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, and so on, but the hallway of a home often receives insufficient thought and budget.

Let’s rethink this... If you consider the journey into a home, the hallway is often the "welcome" into the space. It’s the first thing you see when entering the property and first impressions count. So, it is important to consider this area as much as any other room, as it sets the tone for the rest of the home.

Here are some ways in which hallways can be given added value to ensure they are inviting and have a purpose, as opposed to just being wasted space within the home.

A welcome bench

Adding a hallway bench as a cosy little seating area can provide an inviting welcome "vignette", adding different textures, levels and layers to create interest, as well as a comfy place to tie the shoelaces!

Many urban homes have very narrow hallways, so a narrow console table is the best option to provide a bit of extra storage and an extra surface without taking up too much space. By also adding a mirror above, this will open up the hallway and make it appear larger as well as maximising the light.

Gallery

A hallway is a great place to show off a favourite piece of artwork, injecting some pattern, colour and personality into an otherwise dull space. Whether it be one stand-out piece or a curated selection of pieces to create a gallery wall, this is a simple and effective way to add character where there is limited available space.
