As BoConcept celebrates its 70th anniversary in business, we take a look at some of the reasons for its success for so long.

Many interior design trends have become just as seasonal and temporary as the everchanging fashion industry. However, Scandinavian furniture design rose to high popularity in the 1950’s and has never lost its charm ever since, continuing to stay at the forefront of the interior design industry.

Danish design features core characteristics that have been proven to last through the decades and have outlived many of the design trends that have come and gone over the years.

Here are just a few of these typically Danish design values that run through the veins of BoConcept’s collection. Three trends that are truly timeless and won’t be going anywhere anytime soon:

Natural Materials

Scandinavian designers traditionally favour natural materials such as raw woods, earthy ceramics and organic textures. There is something about materials that blend in with nature that gives a wholesome sense of warmth within a space. Such materials have existed as long as humans have been on the planet, so they really are the definition of a "timeless trend".

Minimalism

Scandinavian design is especially well known for its minimalist principles, where everything within the space has been carefully selected with consideration and defined purpose. The resulting effect is a visual field free of clutter and distraction, which automatically has a relaxing impact on its inhabitants. Also, by choosing clean lines, neutral colours, and subtle shapes, designers reduce the risk of becoming out of fashion over time.

Multifunctionality

Some of the most successful interiors that withstand the test of time are those that consider the functionality of the home. Particularly in urban homes where space is limited, people long for items that are cleverly designed to serve more than one purpose; coffee tables that turn into dining tables, stools that turn into beds, beds that double up as storage. Although less practical styles of furniture do briefly come into fashion, in the end they lose out to the timeless appeal of design that exists to serve the user and there living habits.
