The Stockholm table lamps offer the perfect source of warm light for a gloomy day.

If anyone knows how to beat the winter blues and bring warmth into the grey, gloomy days, it’s the Scandinavians. Tackling 20 hours of darkness during the winter months yet still being classed as one of the happiest countries to live. The Danes are particularly good at covering all bases in the lighting department. Let's delve into some illuminating Scandi tips below...

In terms of the actual light itself, like in all areas of Scandinavian design, using neutral colours and humble natural materials is key to creating an effortlessly stylish finish. However, the most important design factor is what the light can achieve. There are three types of lighting that need to be considered for a successfully lit home: Overall Lighting. Mood Lighting. Task Lighting. These can all be achieved by layering a combination of pendant lights, table lamps, and floor lamps.

PENDANT LIGHTS

Ceiling pendants are ideal for overall lighting, creating an uninterrupted light flow that illuminates the room. However, a bright, white light that completely fills the space can also make it feel cold and stark, so opt for multiple pendants with lower-level or warm white bulbs, preferably on a dimmer switch to cater for all times of day. In some instances, a pendant can be used as task lighting when dropped lower to create specific pools of light over a kitchen island or bedside table, for example.

TABLE LAMPS

Table lamps are the most fun and flexible method of lighting, as they are portable and can be moved around easily. Just like cushions, there is no such thing as too many! Scatter them all around—in dark corners or niches, on side tables, sideboards, and bedside tables. Creating soft pools of light as well as directional task lighting when needed, especially on a desk. Desk lamps not only provide focused lighting but also add to the décor of the workspace.

FLOOR LAMPS

A floor lamp can act as both mood lighting and task lighting. Brightening up a dark corner with a soft, warm bulb for ambience, the height of a floor lamp can create pools of light at varying levels. However, installed next to a reading chair or desk, it can also be a practical source of directional light for extra illumination when carrying out a task.
