# Our Guide to a Very Danish Christmas

Our Global Artistic Director Helena Christensen shares her take on Danish Christmas design — blending atmosphere, natural materials, and thoughtful craftsmanship.

In Denmark, the long winter nights are celebrated with the soft glow of ambient light — a signature element of hygge design. From flickering candles to sculptural lamps, lighting is the foundation of a calm and inviting interior.

As [Helena Christensen](https://www.boconcept.com/en-gb/inspiration/designers/helena-christensen/) explains, “Lighting is everything at Christmas. I scatter candles all around my home – tea lights, pillar candles, anything that adds a soft glow. And I love mixing in statement lighting that doubles as decor.”

For projects, consider layering light sources to create mood and dimension. The [Paris portable lamp](https://www.boconcept.com/en-gb/p/paris/105_00001540/) adds sculptural presence and flexibility, while the [Paddle pendant](https://www.boconcept.com/en-gb/p/paddle/105_60002210-2:298-8:88/) and [Demand floor lamp](https://www.boconcept.com/en-gb/p/demand/105_30000840-8:12/) offer warm, functional lighting that transitions beautifully from day to evening. Ideal for hotel lounges, restaurant settings or residential schemes looking to capture that Danish warmth.

## Bringing the outdoors in

Natural materials are at the heart of Danish design — a balance of tactile comfort and visual calm. This season, Helena encourages designers to bring nature inside with organic textures and scents: pine branches, wool textiles, and soft earthy tones.

To translate this into professional interiors, pair the [Carmo modular sofa](https://www.boconcept.com/en-gb/discover/sofas/carmo/) in moss green with the [Terracina](https://www.boconcept.com/en-gb/p/terracina/3707020-2:339-4:0721/) travertine-effect coffee tables and Teddy cushions, designed by Helena herself, to introduce natural tactility.
Complement the palette with sculptural vases like the [Flor](https://www.boconcept.com/en-gb/p/flora-6/104_11036440-1:149/)a to bring greenery and structure to modern, minimalist spaces — perfect for boutique hotels, wellness areas, or residential lounges.

## Dining, the Danish way

At the heart of a Danish Christmas lies the dining table — a place to gather, connect, and share. The aesthetic is understated but elegant, blending natural wood finishes with soft textiles and candlelight.

For trade buyers, the [Santiago](https://www.boconcept.com/en-gb/discover/tables/santiago/) and [Madrid](https://www.boconcept.com/en-gb/p/madrid/370t086-2:291-9:0075-13:0702/) dining tables in oak embody this timeless appeal. Their organic, circular forms encourage intimacy and flow, while the Santiago extendable option offers flexibility for entertaining or adaptable dining environments.

Pair with [Seoul chairs](https://www.boconcept.com/en-gb/p/seoul/402d201-9:0702s-11:0702/) for a minimalist finish, and complete the look with a [Santiago sideboard](https://www.boconcept.com/en-gb/p/santiago/370ss07-2:378-4:0702-9:0702/), ideal for styling drinks stations or displaying glassware in both residential and hospitality settings.

## Cosy corners and quiet moments

Beyond the festive gatherings, Danish design celebrates ‘ro’ — a sense of calm and stillness. Creating a quiet retreat is as much a part of Christmas as the celebrations themselves.

Helena describes her own ritual: “I can’t wait to make a cosy Christmas corner around the Ø. I’ll place it near a fireplace so I can lay in it with a great book and a mug of warm gløgg.”

For contract environments, this ethos translates beautifully into breakout zones and reading areas. The [Ø lounge chair](https://www.boconcept.com/en-gb/p/ø/4061600-14:6321/), designed by Helena, offers a sculptural yet comforting statement piece, while the [Bolzano armchair](https://www.boconcept.com/en-gb/p/bolzano/4461001-14:6096/) in bouclé or velvet brings a cocooning softness to commercial interiors.
